Are USB drivers compatible with Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Post by ddotmark »

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.6 - Snow Leopard on August 28th and now I can't get my iBike Pro (Generation II) to connect. I get the message "Unit is not responding. Make sure it is turned on and plugged in..." Under the preferences menu get the following:

When I go to the Device Connect menu, I get a <-1> in the 'Com Port for iBike' drop down menu.

So, I'm wondering if the USB drivers have been tested with the new Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system? Could this be my problem with the connect issues. If the USB drivers are compatible with Mac OS 10.6 why am I having problems connecting? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,
Mark

It is possible that all you need to do is to reinstall the iBike software.

Snow Leopard installation may have changed something in the operating system that disabled a part of the National Instruments VISA hooks into the USB.

Thanks for the suggestion...but I've already tried reinstalling the iBike software and the USB drivers...several times with no luck at all. I've spent several hours trying to figure this problem. I've also tried the cable on a friends computer with his iBike software and it worked OK. The only difference was his operating system was Mac OS 10.5.

There is a more complex reinstall and that involves manually removing all traces. Use spotlight to search for NI-VISA the folder contains uninstall instructions.

I did find one user post at National Instruments suggesting that there might be an issue with Snow Leopard, however. It was not necessarily the same software package.

My iBike 3.0.6 works perfectly with Snow Leopard and the Mac USB drivers.

I did not change the drivers I used. I am using iBike 3.0.6, and the USB drivers attached to this posting (we've been shipping these drivers since August 2008).

If you decide to change drivers make sure to uninstall your old USB drivers first.

I had the exact problem that ddotmark described so I uninstalled the old USB driver and downloaded and installed the new driver John H. posted. I am now up and running just fine.

Thanks John for the 'USB Adapter Driver Installer'. I uninstalled the previous USB drivers and loaded the USB driver file you attached to you email message. My iBike Pro (Gen II) is now connecting via the USB connector fine. Thanks for being so incredibly responsive to your customer base.

Hi All-

I had the same problem as reported by the original poster. The mac was a new 10.6 install not an upgrade. I was unable to get the ibike sw to see the unit, I tried multiple times to remove the drivers without any success. I ended up looking at the NI site and found a beta driver for 10.6. I installed the runtime as well as the mandatory components (a debugger I believe) and all is now working perfectly. Here is a link to the download.

http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/1520/lang/en

The release notes indicate that two bugs are fixed in this release:

NI-VISA 4.6.2
Bug ID 143811. VISA installer fails on Mac OS X 10.6. This is fixed.
Bug ID 153752. VISA Configuration Utility crashes during save on Mac OS X 10.6. This is fixed.

I wasn't able to dig long enough to find info about the bugs listed. I don't know if the bug fixed my problem or if there is something different about the installer for 4.6.2.

John, any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks,

Todd

Todd, glad you stumbled across this link at the National Instruments web site. I ran into the same problem again...where I couldn't get the USB adaptor connection to be recognized by the iBike software. I kept on getting the <1> as my only scroll down option when I tried the Device Connect menu option. Also, I kept on getting a pop up message that said that my..."adaptor was not connected, please try again."

After several days, and many hours, of frustrating trouble shooting which involved multiple manual removals of the iBike software and the drivers and reinstallation...the iBike USB adaptor was suddenly recognized. It's a real pain and time consuming process to track down each and ever file that National Instruments installs and manually removing each one. I really wish NI would build an "Uninstall" software feature in their driver bundle.

If I have problems in the future, with the USB adaptor not being recognized, I'll try the beta USB drivers that you posted.

Thanks for posting this helpful information.

Todd's file worked for me too - the driver that loaded w/ the iBike/Mac install didn't work. "Uninstalled" (manual PITA...) that original driver, installed John's recommended file, but no joy - The Great Mac seemed to think I'd installed and wanted to use a modem. Installed Todd's recommended file and all now works!!

Thanks, Todd!

That ßeta driver worked for me too. This should not be difficult. Garmin's software is incredibly simple plug-n-play. One can only hope all software will work so well.

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and am having the same problem. I manually uninstalled the USB drivers as well as trashing the iBike software. I am still getting the same error message. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

I assume you have correctly installed the Mac USB Adapter software. If so and you're still getting the <-1> message, reinstall the iBike Mac software, MAKING SURE to do the following:

a) Launch the iBike Mac 4.0.4 Intel installer. The iBike Mac software will install first.

b) Near the end of the iBike Mac software install you'll see the NI VISA installer appear

Screen shot 2010-07-05 at 1.51.56 PM.png (54.34 KiB) Viewed 12642 times
c) DO NOT CLICK THE "CONTINUE" BUTTON OF THE NI-VISA INSTALLATION UNTIL THE IBIKE MAC SOFTWARE HAS FINISHED INSTALLING. IT MAY TAKE 30 SECONDS OR MORE FOR THE IBIKE MAC SOFTWARE TO FINISH A COMPLETE INSTALLATION. WHEN THE IBIKE MAC SOFTWARE HAS COMPLETELY FINISHED INSTALLING YOU WILL YOU SEE THE FOLLOWING SCREEN:

Screen shot 2010-07-05 at 1.51.48 PM.png (78.43 KiB) Viewed 12643 times
d) Click the "Close" button on the iBike Mac installation.

e) After clicking the "Close" button for the iBike Mac installation then, AND ONLY THEN, click the "Continue" button of the NI_VISA installation.

Hopefully this will get you going. Let us know...
