New PowerPod -- won't blink yellow to calibrate

Post by eschlange »

Hi Folks,

Just got my PowerPod and I'm trying to set it up. Worked like the instructions said (charged up, paired the speed sensor, paired the ANT+ power to my Garmin 500) but now I can't get it to calibrate.

I can't get the light to blink yellow, it just stays solid yellow. Tried riding for more than 8 minutes thinking maybe the instructions weren't clear and the light actually blinked just for a few seconds when it finished calibrating... but it just powered itself off about 5 minutes into my ride when I did that, so it clearly wasn't calibrating when solid yellow.

If I hold the power button and reboot it, it just goes to solid yellow again but won't blink.

I installed Isaac software but haven't used it to change any settings, because as I understand it profile 1 is automatically loaded on the PowerPod.

I tried turning on calibration using my Garmin 500 head unit (which I'm pretty sure won't do any good) but that didn't do anything either.

What should I do? Thanks!

Do the following:

1) Make sure your bike is in a location where there are no other bikes within 100 feet of yours. This way, you can be sure you are pairing to your own bike only.

2) Make sure your speed and cadence sensors are properly mounted. If you're using magnets, make sure the magnets pass within 1-2 coin widths of the respective sensor

3) Spin the rear wheel of the bike, and turn the crank backwards too, to awaken your speed and cadence sensors

4) Press-hold the PP button for 4 seconds, until it starts to flash green. Pairing is restarted, and your PowerPod will show solid green when pairing is complete. The light will go out after that

5) Click the button; the light will be solid yellow, indicating ready to calibrate

6) To confirm that things are working properly, spin your rear wheel for about 30 seconds. The light will start to flash yellow, indicating that all is well.

7) Pair to your Garmin

8) When ready to do the "real" cal ride, click the button so that solid Yellow shows, then start riding. You'll see your Garmin go from 1 --> 100.

Hi John,

OK--I tried to do what you instructed below. Here's what happens:

1) Make sure your bike is in a location where there are no other bikes within 100 feet of yours. This way, you can be sure you are pairing to your own bike only. OK, I did this--I'm at the office with no other bikes nearby!

2) Make sure your speed and cadence sensors are properly mounted. If you're using magnets, make sure the magnets pass within 1-2 coin widths of the respective sensor These seem fine--my Garmin picks up my cadence and speed properly.

3) Spin the rear wheel of the bike, and turn the crank backwards too, to awaken your speed and cadence sensors Done

4) Press-hold the PP button for 4 seconds, until it starts to flash green. Pairing is restarted, and your PowerPod will show solid green when pairing is complete. The light will go out after that It flashes green, then goes to solid green. Once it's solid green my clicking the button doesn't seem to have any effect... it just stays green for ~15s then turns to solid yellow.

5) Click the button; the light will be solid yellow, indicating ready to calibrate Like I said in #4, clicking the button doesn't do anything... I just have to wait about 15s then it turns solid yellow.

6) To confirm that things are working properly, spin your rear wheel for about 30 seconds. The light will start to flash yellow, indicating that all is well.
Once it turned solid yellow I spun the rear wheel and pedals for 60s, but it never started blinking.

I've tried this numerous times, but the result is always the same--it just stays solid yellow and eventually powers itself off even if I'm riding. It definitely seems like it's not picking up the speed/cadence sensor... but like I said my Garmin shows the numbers so I know the ANT+ data is being sent.

Problem solved, I think!

I reset my speed sensor (took battery out and reversed it for 10s, then put it back in) and also adjusted the speed sensor pickup arm so it was closer to the magnet. Now I've got a blinking yellow light--just gotta get outside to do the calibration ride.

So weird how the Garmin head unit picked it up before, but the PowerPod didn't. I wonder if the Garmin was doing some error correction, or maybe could pick up weaker signals or something...

Anyway--I'll post here if anything goes wrong during my calibration ride, but I think it'll work now. Thanks for the support--looking forward to having power reading IRL for the first time!

If you're using a combined speed/cadence sensor, then Garmin will register something even if the speed sensor is not working (but cadence is).

And if you're in motion the Garmin will report speed even if the speed sensor is not working. Instead it uses GPS to estimate speed.

PowerPod requires a fully functioning speed sensor.

Good luck with your first ride!

Ah--that makes sense!

So my speed sensor probably hasn't worked for a while. Ha! Learn something new every day.
