Always a tail wind!
Always a tail wind!
It seems the wind scaling is off, as Isaac shows I am experiencing a tail wind when I ride in circles.
I set the ground wind speed to zero and it seems to reflect the actual windspeed better.
I have attached uncorrected and corrected files. This includes 6 laps of a crit course and 4 hill repeats, so wind angles definitely changed.
How do I reset wind calibration? In setup mode on N6?
Thanks

Re: Always a tail wind!
Do the following:
1) Connect Newton to Isaac
2) Open your original ride file
3) Use the Analyze/Check Calibration command
4) Say "no" when asked about drafting (this isn't 100% true, because you did draft some for a few miles, but it doesn't affect results too much)
5) Isaac will create a new profile with the corrected wind factor
6) Go to Edit/Edit Profiles. Your corrected profile will be at the top of the list. Send this profile to your Newton

Thanks John.
Re: Always a tail wind!
I followed your instructions on a ride file that had no drafting at all.
Original and corrected files attached.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Hi John;
I'm still having the same issue with wind after following your instructions.
This ride had some drafting (7.1%) which I ignored for "Check Calibration".
I did not send this correction the the N6 as I did last time.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Thanks.
I see the tailwind both up and down the same hill repeat.
It just seems to me that if I have a 7 km/hr tailwind up the hill, I should have a 7 km/hr headwind on the way down in the opposite direction.. No?

Re: Always a tail wind!
This is tricky
1) Your uphill is at low speed, where wind speed is difficult (and fortunately irrelevant) to measure
2) Your downhill is in the opposite direction, where wind speed can be seen.
3) Your climbs are right at the ocean, presumably where there are breezes
The net of the above is that this is not a good section to use for wind adjustment.
The early (and late) parts of your ride show normal wind speed readings.
I would leave things alone.

Re: Always a tail wind!
OK, thanks. That makes sense.
I haven't done anything in terms of the ride file. I did set the Wind Cal in the N6 this evening in prep for a big ride tomorrow.
Gotta say, you guys are the best at covering customer issues.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Hi John;
On todays ride it was fairly breezy and yet over a very circuitous route, it appears I had a tailwind for virtually the entire ride.
This is not the case, there were some significant headwinds.
Also, power on downhill sections, where I closely watch the power, often showed zero or very low wattage when I was putiing fair force on the pedals.
It seems all rides are now showing mostly tailwinds.
How do I permanently correct the N6?
BTW, I did follow your instructions farther up the thread and 'send to device'.

Re: Always a tail wind!
This is a long ride and it's tough to know what wind conditions were throughout.
I suggest you do a new cal ride. You can post the results here so we can check things.

Will do. Might be a few days.
Thanks

Re: Always a tail wind!
Latest Cal Ride.
Wind offset seems good - downhill efforts resulted in power being displayed on N6 and power generally seemed realistic.
Why does this happen? It seems I have a good Cal Ride then at some point things get skewed.
Thanks

Re: Always a tail wind!
Your new cal ride has results very similar to your old one.
If you are seeing tail winds it is either because they are real, or because your wind port is clogged, perhaps due to moisture. I suspect the tail winds are real.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Here's tonight's ride. As you can see there is an out and back with tail wind in both directions. Not true.
I see that the indicated tail wind was was around 15 km/h with a high of 30 km/h. The countervailing tailwind is indicated as roughly 10 km/h!
There was a significant (not really strong) headwind on the flat section before the first climb too.
This is the same N6 but on a different bike with a different Cal Ride. Nonetheless, I am experiencing the same phenomenon.
A couple of weeks ago I rode in heavy rain and the hydrophobic material failed and the port got blocked with water. I took the N^ off, taped it and gently blew into the port and the power slowly came back. This issue predates that incident though.
I don't think these indicated tail winds are real.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Your cal rides look normal and your wind scaling factors are nearly identical.
The only other thing to check is "cal wind". This number should be around zero. If it is far away from zero that could be a factor.
If you do a cal wind you MIGHT need to do a new cal ride.
Other than this I can't provide any additional insight.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Thanks John.
Wind Cal in the Setup in N6 I assume...
I checked the WindCal in N6 and see that, with my finger covering the port, it reads approx -3.3 (varies from -3.1 to -3.5).
I reset to zero. Now varies between 0 and -.1, pretty good I expect.
I'll do another Cal Ride this morning and ride. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I see that the port seems a little dirty. How can I clean the surface area of the port without damaging the coating or potentially blocking the pressure hole? Or is it an issue at all.
An aside; will the Aeropod be more stable in these sort of background settings?
Thanks again, your patience is remarkable.

Re: Always a tail wind!
After ride, Isaac looks much better.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It's OK to clean the wind port.
AeroPod uses a new wind sensor which is much more immune to wind calibration drift.

Re: Always a tail wind!
Thanks again.
What is the best method for cleaning the port.
After cleaning, do I need to do a new Cal Ride?

Re: Always a tail wind!
You can rinse the port under tap water. Just make sure to throughly dry it.
I would not do a new cal ride unless you see a big change in wind response.
