Requirement of Garmin for using Aeropod

I'm using my aeropod in profile 4 with a Garmin watch. It doesn't support the Aeropod 2.0 app, so I'm using the older one.
But then I wonder if I even need the app installed? If I'm just interested in collecting data, is it enough if I just pair my watch with aeropod, start the ride on the watch and do the lap markers, without needing the app? To further that, would it work if I just use my Wahoo and connect with the aeropod and do the lap markings?

If the old AP app marks laps (I don't remember if it does...) then you can do all your analysis afterwards using VA.

At this time Wahoo does not support AP CdA usage.
