Joint announcement with Notio

Post by EHB »

What does the joint announcement with NOTIO actually mean without an ANT+ or BT profile? I can’t see how this effect things. Does it mean that you can use each other’s Connect IQ Apps? Or are you hoping other bike computer manufacturers, such as Wahoo, use it? I don’t really understand what this actually does.

Velocomp and Notio are creating a Common Aero Profile (CAP) for ANT+:

1) Notio and Velocomp products will be interoperable. For example, if you use Velocomp's AeroPod CdA app, our app will also be able to read Notio sensor data.

2) The Common Aero Profile is available, without cost, to any sensor manufacturer or bike computer company who chooses to use it.

3) the Common Aero Profile means that bike computer manufacturers who adopt will have compatibility with and any aero sensor (or Velocomp power meter) product that implements the CAP

4) The CAP is an ANT+ profile (we are also thinking about BT but haven't yet decided). Having the profile available now makes it possible, NOW, to have a common standard for aero devices.

5) For whatever reason, Garmin has not issued an aero profile (though they have been working on one for over 2 years now). At some point in the future perhaps they will; if they do, and assuming bike computer manufacturers adopt it, we and Notio will migrate to it. In the mean time the CAP will get the market moving, and expanding, NOW.

I thought ANT+ was only Garmin official profiles and so it wasn’t possible to create ANT+ profiles without involving Garmin and so this would be an open ANT (no plus) profile?

I still don’t quite see the point unless you can convince other bike-computer manufacturers to implement the open protocol. Wouldn’t it have made loads more sense if you’d asked one of the big bike-computer manufacturers to get on board?

Until there is a standard aero profile, there is nothing for bike computer or aero sensor companies to implement.

Garmin/ANT has been working on an aero profile spec for over two years. They still have not published one. That is a ridiculously long period of time, and there is no time frame for them to finish it.

In the mean time, Notio and Velocomp have 100% share of the market and together we have over 10,000 devices in cyclist hands. We are creating the Common Aero Profile (CAP) so that our devices will be interoperable on ANT (this is completely allowed by ANT rules). We are offering CAP to other aero sensor companies. CAP will work immediately on ConnectIQ, and we hope that bike computer companies will implement CAP in the near term.

If/when Garmin/ANT eventually publishes an aero profile...great. But until then, Notio and Velocomp believe that the time is NOW to provide a common aero profile that will help expand interest in the aero sensor market.
