Pairing with multiple powermeters

Post by refthimos »

OK I have what admittedly is a fringe use case. I have crank PMs on all my bikes, including my TT bike. But I understand that for CdA measurement, it is best to measure power as far downstream as possible, e.g. at the hub, in order to eliminate variation due to variable drivetrain losses (e.g. drivetrain dirtier one day than the other, cross-chaining friction, etc)

With that, I purchased and will use an Enve 7.8 wheel with Powertap G3 hub for Aeropod testing. It seems that the G3 hub is well-supported, which is great. But it also seems that if the Aeropod is exposed to multiple PM signals during the pairing process, you can't be quite sure of which PM it till pair with? The solution would be to put the Powertap G3 wheel on a bike without a PM and away from other PMs. But all my bikes have PMs. OK, so just take the battery out of the PM, right? Well, they are all rechargeable (P2MAx NG) and all have a pretty decent charge left in them.

With all this in mind, will the Aeropod "prioritize" the Powertap G3 (because it is both PM + speed sensor) over the P2Max NG (which is PM only) or will I need to pair the Aeropod and Powertap G3 on a bike that doesn't have a PM in order to eliminate dueling PM signals? And if I do need to do that, should I go ahead and calibrate the Aeropod on this loaner bike, which will likely resemble nothing like my TT bike, or can I then swap the Aeropod and Powertap G3 back to my TT bike for the calibration?

Can you wake up the Powertap hub by spinning it without moving the cranks and waking up the P2Max? Then pair with the AP.

This is exactly what I would do, too.
