Transmitting Power to multiple devices?

Post by Thomas »

Hi,

I have a PPv4
I'm using the Wahoo Fitness App on my galaxy S10 as a cycling computer. (sensors pair over ANT+ not BLE)
I also use my Garmin 935 watch to record cycling activities.

I cannot pair both my Garmin and Wahoo app to the PowerPod simultaneously. Should this be supported? Does the PP take GPS /Elevation from the connected computer?

Yes.

No. You need to use the NT tracker app, or you can merge GPS data from your bike computer into Isaac.

Hi John,

So I understand. The PP can send power data to multiple devices over ANT+? and or BLE?

the problem I have is when I begin a ride power will show on either my Garmin or Wahoo App. If I disconnect from one source power will show on the other and vice versa . I cannot display Power on both devices simultaneously.

My phone / Wahoo App is using ANT+

Over ANT+ it is unlimited.

Over BLE you can transmit (pair) to one device only.

Make sure your Garmin is paired by ANT+ to PP.

Thanks John,

Yes, on closer inspection PP is using BLE to connect to my phone / Wahoo App

My Garmin is also defaulting to connect to PP via BLE - is there a trick to pair via ANT+?

You'll need to read your Garmin instructions.

Suggestion -

After reading the Garmin instructions....

For each sensor you pair to a Garmin, you can get information about that sensor and in there are DETAILS. Within the DETAILS you will find how the sensor is communicating - ANT+ or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

For some sensors both are possible, but the details will be one or the other for the sensor ID you select.

Delete the sensor, if it shows up as BLE and then the ANT+ version will be the only one connected.

Thanks Tom,

Yes the sensor is showing as connected by BLE under details, I also found out the Wahoo App on my phone now only uses BLE (even though ANT+ is supported on my phone) This explains why I can only view on one or the other.

1. I have tried disabling and or removing the PP on my Garmin and searching again hoping to pick-up ANT+ without success.

2. I have tried another cycling computer App that DOES support ANT+ I have confirmed by disabling BLE on my android phone and connecting my HRM - unfortunately it cannot find the PP

Both my Garmin and Android phone apps find the PP by BLE almost instantly. Is there a procedure for connecting ANT+? does the PP have to be transmitting Power?

Interestingly on my Wahoo App all connected sensors display a ANT ID, however, for the PP the ANT ID is - 1

PP has to be awake and paired to its speed sensor (solid green) prior to starting any ANT+ bike computer pairing process.

I have no knowledge of how the Garmin (or Wahoo) devices do their pairing procedures. I suggest you consult their technical support pages.

I just learnt that with Garmin both ANT + BLE sensors are shown simultaneously when searching. By default ANT is shown first then BLE. I have been unnecessarily connecting both ANT + BLE on dual transmitting devices.

Example for my dual transmitting Speed Sensor it first shows ANT then if I select "show bluetooth devices" I can connect BLE too.

I'll try mounting PP and ensure it's connected to speed sensor and try again

When I mount the PP wake up the speed sensor and click the button once the light shows solid Red then turns off.

If I connect the PP to my PC then "Get from Device" under my profile--> wireless sensors it appears all connected sensors are now forgotten..

But if I hold the button down for 4 seconds to get flashing green light , it just stays flashing for around 2 minutes and never connects.... I'll try a factory reset again.

SUCCESS!!

No factory reset

1. I restored profile and sent to device (restored wireless IDs too).?

2. Woke up Speed Sensor

3. Clicked PP button Once. The light shows solid YELLOW

4. searched for sensor on garmin and there it is

Although I use a Garmin Edge 830 and not a wrist watch device - I have found that the only reliable pairing of my Garmin and PP to the speed/cadence sensors comes from waking the speed and cadence sensors, then one-click on the PP to wake it up. Just a few seconds later I get the solid green on the PP indicating is has found the sensors and is communicating only then do I turn on the Garmin.

So the oder is: sensors -> PP -> Garmin. Now for a Wahoo or other bike computer I have no experience.

A few times I had turned on the Garmin earlier - but then is sometimes would pair to BLE.

This is good advice.

The instant PP is turned on it begins transmitting in BLE mode. So, any bike computer would see PP as a BLE power meter and pair immediately using the BLE channel.

ANT+ is NOT turned on the instant PP is turned on. Instead, PP must first "find" the speed sensor (indicated by solid green light). Only AFTER the speed sensor is found will the PP ANT+ mode be enabled.

Yes, this was why I was getting confused.

BLE showed instantly by simply turning on the PP without waking the Speed Sensor (it was on my desk next to my computer) this left me thinking there was a pairing issue

Thanks John and Tom

This graphic is from the Garmin Connect app, right?
Mine looks totally different, so wondering now if I have something that needs addressing or configure differently
Thanks
