Calibration Analysis (John)

Post by dmwelk »

John:

Could you look over my two most recent ride files from this weekend and let me know how it looks, as far as calibration. The 4/17 ride file was a 59 mile out and back gravel ride with about 14 miles of asphault thrown in. Any recommendation on a CRR for gravel riding. This was more of a medium pack gravel. The power put out on my end was more than the ride file shows based on perceived exertion, but I knew that before the ride started because I have not created a ride file for gravel. The 4/18 ride file was 54 mile loop of road riding with 2800 feet of elevation gain that started and ended in the same location. Also when looking at the ride file what should I be looking at to gauge calibration? Am I looking at the wind speed relative to bike speed? If so how much variance between the two speeds is considered acceptable? I would appreciate any information you could provide.

1) When looking at a ride file, I look to see if wind speed and bike speed are comparable. Unless riding in strong head/tail winds (which is obvious to see) then the graphs should be similar. Yours are, so the unit is properly calibrated.

2) For your gravel bike, riding in hard-packed gravel, I adjusted Crr up to 0.014, a value reported by a velocomp forum customer.

Corrected ride file and profile attached. Note that this profile uses the same sensor IDs as your road bike, so you will have to switch profiles manually.

John:

I'm using the same bike for both road and gravel, I will just switch profiles when I do one surface over the other. I noticed that my friction number decreased when my CRR was raised from a .0087 for the road profile to .0140 for the gravel profile. My friction went from a mid 7.0 to around a 3.1. Should the friction have dropped? Seems as though it should have went up or at least remained the same.
