Long cal ride

I was helping a friend set up his new Ppod cal ride. I made sure it was paired, had the red green flashing light then pressed the button to start the cal ride. I told him he would hit 50 watts a half mile or so down the road and when I didn't see him return after 10 minutes I started driving to see what happened. I did see him returning and when he came by he kept going saying 94 watts or something. He eventually returned and told me it took 4.3 miles for the Ppod to get up to 100. Obviously somethings not right. Any ideas?
