AeroPod, PowerPod and Newton

So I've had my powerpod for just over a year and am delighted with it. Up to last week I was using it in combination with a Garmin Edge 500 and both were faultless.

Then I was given a new Wahoo Bolt. I paired up all the sensors and all was well. However, on the ride the watts were fluctuating a lot more than I was used to on the Edge 500. Numbers were bouncing around between 300w and 110w every second or so...even on a constant effort in light winds.

I've checked that Dynamic smoothing is set on the PP profile. The Bolt is set to show 'Power - watts'. No averaging or anything.

Is the Bolt doing something a little funky with the data received from the PP? I could try the Edge again to see if the issue repeats. Does anyone else run this combo successfully?

It may be your Wahoo sensors. They have lots of noise in them.

Please note I use Garmin magnet-less sensors with the speed sensor on the front wheel hub. PP is attached directly below the Bolt on a K-Edge combo mount.

On a similar note, whilst the data appears to look OK to me in ISAAC, I've always struggled to really fully dial in the settings for this particular bike. The watts just seem a touch high even when I compare efforts with Bikecalculator and the Aerocoach calculator. Wind scaling at 2.419 and friction at 14.026 are quite high in comparison with my other road bike.

I do run 35mm diameter handlebars and a slightly lower stem height. Not sure whether that may explain some of the differences?

Would you be able to cast an expert eye and tell me what you think?

Your ride file looks great. There is no noise in the speed signal.

Your Crr is pretty high, unless this for a MTB. If not, lower your Crr t0 0.0054. That will drop watts some.

As for the jumpy numbers being displayed on my Bolt - any ideas? Looking through some of the posts on the forum, I can see there are other Bolt/ Elemnt users but can't see anyone else mention the same issue.

I'll have a play with the PP and Bolt and see how it compares directly with my old Edge 500. Otherwise I may have to try using 'X' second average on either device to see what works best.

Wattage is inherently a jumpy number. Make sure your profile is set to "Dynamic Power Smoothing" for best results.
