Connecting PP to Garmin Fenix

I am trying to connect my PP to a Garmin Fenix HR. There is snow on the roads where I live so I haven’t done the out and back calibration, instead I did the Setup Device in Isaac and used the Better Accuracy setting and sent that to the PP. Then I turned on Indoor Trainer Mode.

After that I went through pairing the speed and cadence sensors to the PP and Garmin. Then I paired the PP to the Fenix by going to the Sensor set up on the Garmin, added the PP and made sure it showed as connected. The light on the PP went solid green for a few seconds and then went out.

When I started riding no power information was displayed. I clicked on the power button on the PP and got a solid yellow/orange light. After the ride, the power data on the Garmin Connect was zero and no files were available on the PP to download to Isaac.

Any suggestions what might be wrong.

Thanks

Bill

Unfortunately there is a firmware bug.

Please post the serial number of your unit; we will see if we can provide you a workaround.

The serial # is 12-14-18-08-05-0C-B0-00-03-00-93-03-AC-7F-10-02.

I'm afraid that you'll have to do an outdoor cal ride in order to enable the indoor trainer mode.

We don't have a FW fix right now but we will let you know when we do.

Thanks for the information. I have a cross bike so if I do the calibration on that bike, can I use my road bike indoors or do I need to do a calibration for each bike?

To set your PowerPod for your indoor riding you will need to calibrate your device on an outdoor ride, using the SAME speed sensor that you will use on your indoor bike.

Do the following:

1) Take the speed sensor off your indoor bike, and place it on your outdoor bike (if you have a cadence sensor move that one, too)

2) Attach PowerPod to your outdoor bike

3) Make sure PowerPod has indoor trainer mode turned OFF

4) Pair PowerPod to your sensors on your outdoor bike

5) Do a calibration ride.

6) Move the sensors back to your indoor bike and attach PP to your indoor bike

7) Turn on Indoor Trainer mode

8) Don't worry about the calibration results from your outdoors ride; they won't have any meaning for your indoor riding.

Once you do these steps you'll be able to ride indoors.

Make sure you do NOT perform a new sensor pairing on your indoor bike. Each time you do a new sensor pairing you will force a new (outdoor) calibration ride.

Sorry for the inconvenience; we will fix this in a future FW update.

I was able to get out and do a calibration ride a few days ago and everything seemed to work well. I got the calibration, then transferred by PP to my indoor bike and as able to connect everything and do a short ride. The results looked good but when I tried to do a ride the next day, every time I turned on the PP I got the flashing green lights for a few seconds and then the lights turned off. Since then I have done two more calibrations and each time it seems to do one ride after I move indoors and then the PP wants to calibrate again.

I have a Cycle-Ops fluid trainer and there are five profiles, none of which seem to be right for me so I have been modifying them to try to get one that is reasonably accurate. After a ride I may change the settings and then sending it to the PP. Would changing the settings trigger a re-calibration request? If yes, is there any way to change the trainer setting without needing to re-calibrate? I think my FTP is about 225 watts so is there a better way to do this tuning?

The weather is going to be warmer for a few days so I am going to try to do another calibration and then do a couple of rides outside to see if the PP is working with my Fenix.

You can change trainer settings without forcing a new calibration. The only thing that triggers a calibration is a sensor pairing. This does mean that the speed sensor you used on your outdoor calibration ride is the sensor you should use on your trainer bike.

Hi John:

I was able get get out on Saturday and did a calibration ride, then I rode outside for about an hour. Both the calibration and outside ride seemed to work well and I got what looks reasonable data. I moved the sensors and PP to my indoor bike and set the PP to indoor mode. I did a short indoor ride and everything seemed to work.

Today I was going to go for another indoor ride but when I turned the wheels to wake up the sensors and then turned on the PP, I got a series of green flashing lights which stopped after a few seconds. I tried this several times but never appeared to get a connection and no power data was displayed on the Garmin. This appears to be a continuation of my previous experience of calibrating the PP, doing one indoor ride successfully and then loosing the connection. Any suggestions on how to proceed.

Thanks

Bill

By any chance, do you have a DFPM on your bike? If so, the DFPM needs to be "awake" too...

Please post a ride file of your indoor ride.

I don't have DFPM.

Here is the file for my indoor ride.

This ride file is only 1 minute long. Is that correct?

Also, it shows a date of 1/12/19, is that correct?

Yes, the ride was only about a minute. I was just checking to see if I could get power data after my outside ride and then transferring to indoors. The date is also correct.

OK, then everything seems to be working?

That one minute ride Jan. 12th worked well but two days later I tried to do an indoor ride and I got the flashing green lights but no connection and no power. Good news though, I just tried again, got a connection and did a 70 minute ride (see attached file). I'm not sure but I think the only thing I did differently today from the other days, when I could not get a connection was today I turned on the PP before I started pedalling. I think the other days I started pedalling, then I turned on the PP. Would that difference in sequence explain what has been happening? I will try a couple more test rides spaced 3-4 hours apart so the PP turns off and see if I can get a consistent connection.

One other question for when I start riding outside regularly, I have two bike that I would like to use the PP with. I have seen in the Isaac instructions how I can have two profiles on the PP but how do I switch between them on my Garmin? I haven't seen anything on this in the documentation.

Thanks

This file looks good. All that may be happening is that you get the flashing green, then the light goes out. If you click again it is solid green. We will fix this in the next FW update.

Your Garmin will see the same power ID from your device. If you have different speed/cadence sensors on your bikes, you will need to make sure your Garmin sees the correct speed/cadence sensors.

When I did the ride today I didn't see any solid green lights but I will check on that the next time a do a ride.

Thanks for the help.

I got everything to work and I have been using the PP for my indoor training. I am switching to outdoors now and have run into another calibration problem. I added a new profile for the bike I am using but when I tried to do a calibration ride I couldn't get it to work. Whenever I turn on the PP, I always get a solid red light for a few seconds and then it goes out. I have tried this several times with the same result. I have tried removing the PP from my Garmin with no affect and pressing the Power button on the PP for over 10 seconds to see if that might reset it. None of these seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Bill

I just found your YouTube video on calibating to a second bike and it talks about getting the solid red light and what to do. I think I did what it describes but I will try again tomorrow just to make sure. I will post an update after that.

The instructions on the video worked perfectly and I have had several rides with no problems. The solution was definitely the description of seeing the solid red light. I didn't find that anywhere in the written documentation.
