Slope not affecting power

My powerpod readings seem to be related directly to speed only. When I am going uphill my speed drops, and so does the power (it is annoying knowing you are working hard but the power reading is at 35W!).
I have run the device set up, selected best accuracy, but when I start my ride and push the button the green light comes on, then off, and no calibration takes place. Is there a hard reset to start again?
