Doesn't Calibrate

Hi,

I have a new (replacement) PowerPod, and although I was able to set it up the first time (so I've done everything 'right' once!) I am having difficulties with this one:
- The cadence sensor is working
- The speed sensor (magnetless, front hub) is working
- The PowerPod is pairing to the sensors and giving me a green light
- My Garmin head unit is pairing to the PowerPod
- I press the button, and get the yellow light ...

But then when I set off on my calibration ride, the Garmin reports '0W' and this doesn't change, and after a minute or two the yellow light on the PowerPod goes out, without even blinking once. I've done hard resets and repeated the process several times ... with always the same result.

Are there any other tricks I could try?

Regards,
Stuart

Hmm...it sounds like the pairing is working, but maybe not...

1) confirm that your speed sensor is working by spinning the front wheel, without the bike in motion, and that you see speed in the Garmin's window

2) press-hold the PP button for about 10 seconds, until its light goes out temporarily and then flashes, to do a hard reset of the PP

3) spin your front wheel and turn the crank backwards about 5 times, so that the sensors are awake

4) pair PP to your sensors (press-hold button for 4 seconds, then release)

5) After doing this your light should be solid yellow. Please report if it is a different color

6) Finally, pair your PP to your Garmin

7) Now, start riding. After about 10 seconds the PP light should flash yellow, and you should see power increment slowly in the Garmin

Let us know what happens!

Thanks for the quick response!

I followed your steps:
1) confirm that your speed sensor is working by spinning the front wheel, without the bike in motion, and that you see speed in the Garmin's window - Yep, no problem with this

2) press-hold the PP button for about 10 seconds, until its light goes out temporarily and then flashes, to do a hard reset of the PP - Yep, no problem with this

3) spin your front wheel and turn the crank backwards about 5 times, so that the sensors are awake - Yep, no problem with this

4) pair PP to your sensors (press-hold button for 4 seconds, then release) - Yep, no problem with this

5) After doing this your light should be solid yellow. Please report if it is a different color- Yep, solid yellow. No problem here

6) Finally, pair your PP to your Garmin - Yep, no problem with this

7) Now, start riding. After about 10 seconds the PP light should flash yellow, and you should see power increment slowly in the Garmin

This is where it starts to go wrong (every time):
- The yellow light starts flashing (hurrah!)
- But there's no movement on reported power (sits at zero)
- The neighbours probably think I'm weird; in full cycling kit going up and down our street like a 3-year-old with stabilisers :)
- After a few minutes, the PowerPod gets bored (??) and turns itself off
- So I push the button once (why not?) to wake it up. Then I again get the flashing yellow for a minute or two, then it goes to sleep again

This is 'extra frustrating', because the first PowerPod paired, calibrated, worked etc. so easily. What other steps can I try?

Dear Mr Hamann,

I received my Powerpod bought in eBay USA last week and it presented same issue as current topic report. I installed it in a road bike that works with Garmin 510 and integrated speed/cadence BL and ANT+ (ECHOWELL)

So I performed seven steps that you mentioned on current topic and have scenario for each Step:

First replaced cadence speed sensor CR2032 battery and check it indication on Garmin by way of wheel spin with bike stopped.
Checked POWERPOD mechanical installation (left side hand bar)

1) Have no cable obstructions in powerpod windport.
2) Procedure mentioned in current step reset Powerpod as you mentioned.
3) Wheel spin and cadence/speed sensor led flashed.
4) After press and hold powerpod button 4sec it led flashed green and few second after that, it turned solid green. I guess that it paired with speed/cadence sensor (Garmin 510 in off mode)
5, 6 and 7) when started Garmin 510 and enabled Power Sensor searching, Powerpod led turned solid orange color. After that it start flash orange (Garmin show message (PowerSensor found).

8) started ride bike and power shows 0 Watt, also led became solid Orange.

9) After 5 minutes aprox , powerpod. Flash led orange power change between 1 to 3w and it turned off automatically.

10) Start it again pressing button and it show green led flashing, after 20 seconds turn off again. Repeated current step 3 or four times and it remained same condition.

Could you help with my new Powerpod ? In live in São Paulo Brazil and here have no dealers or services to support me.

Best Regards,

Mario Domenici

Do the following:

1) Place your bike in a position where you can spin the rear wheel, but NOT have to ride the bike (that is, lift the rear wheel off the ground)

2) Wake up your Garmin 510

3) Confirm the fact that, with the bike not moving down the road, when you spin the rear wheel, the 510 shows bike speed. If the 510 does NOT show bike speed, then your sensor is not working properly

4) Assuming that your 510 IS showing bike speed, then wake up your PowerPod.

5) The PowerPod should show solid green.

6) The PowerPod light will go out. When you click the button again, the PP should show solid yellow.

7). With the PP showing solid yellow, start turning the bike wheel, to make speed show on your Garmin.

8) After a few seconds the PP light should start flashing yellow, and the watts will start to climb slowly from 0 to 100.

9) After the watts reach 10, STOP THE WHEEL.

Please post the results from the above 9 steps, so we can determine what to do next.

Ok, placed front rear against wall.

2) Wake up your Garmin 510

Ok, Garmin 510 started and recognized speed/cadence sensor normally.

3) Confirm the fact that, with the bike not moving down the road, when you spin the rear wheel, the 510 shows bike speed. If the 510 does NOT show bike speed, then your sensor is not working properly

Ok, Garmin showed speed and cadence.

4) Assuming that your 510 IS showing bike speed, then wake up your PowerPod.

Ok, PP started with orange led solid led indication, and Garmin showed "Power Sensor found"

5) The PowerPod should show solid green.

PP remained Orange Solid led.

6) The PowerPod light will go out. When you click the button again, the PP should show solid yellow.
PP turn led off and then started with orange solid again.

7). With the PP showing solid yellow, start turning the bike wheel, to make speed show on your Garmin.

PP stared flashed orange led, Garmin indicated cadence/speed and Power started to varying slowly increasing from 0

8) After a few seconds the PP light should start flashing yellow, and the watts will start to climb slowly from 0 to 100.

PP increased slowly from 0 to 100W , when I moved pedals with rear lift rear wheel and bike stopped with front wheel against wall.

9) After the watts reach 10, STOP THE WHEEL.

When Power indication in Garmin arrived at 100w, it return to zero and I stopped wheel.

Right Now, if I press PP button , and spin rear wheel with bike stopped , it turn solid green light Garmin shows Power and after aprox seconds PP turn off automatically.

Please post the results from the above 9 steps, so we can determine what to do next.

OK, so the above steps were all successful, which is good news.

Did you let PP climb all the way to 100W? The instructions said to let it count to 10W, then STOP.

Please confirm...

What kind of speed/cadence sensor are you using?

Dear Mr Hamann,

Thank you for your support and prompt reply.

First of all, I am using combo speed/cadence sensor BL/ANT+ model DMTR30 supplied by Echowell.

Pardon me, I really did procedure wrong. I did PP climb to 100, i.e., lift rear wheel with bike stopped, pedaling during aprox. 5 minutes Power indication slowly increased from 0 to 100w (for example 0, 5, 8, 10, 13, 18, 22, 25...100W)

Is there way to revert PP calibration wrong procedure ? Or May I wait for new instructions ? What can I do next ?

Best Regards,

You have inadvertently "calibrated" your PowerPod while at rest.

This is OK, but the first 8 minutes of your next ride will show wacky watts. Then, the power level will correct itself automatically.

Please download and install Isaac software, available for free from ibikesports.com.

After you do your next ride, download the ride to Isaac, then post the .ibr ride file. That file will help determine what is going on.

Dear Mr Hamann,

Thank you for your prompt support. I going to upload Newton Software.

Just one more question. When I bought PowerPod in eBay, bought item description mentioned, POWERPOD + Power Stroke.

What is PowerStroke and What is it used for ?

Once you download and install Isaac, go to the Help menu. You'll find PowerStroke documentation there.
