Climbing Total

Post by thooey »

I did a ride with my son today and when I import it is showing a total of 733' climbing. My Garmin showed 1,477', both show the same distance roughly. Is there something wrong with the file or my calibration?

Thank you.

According to your ride file, you rode 34 miles.

It looks like you had two long climbs; one had a slope of about 1.4% and the other a bit over 2%.

I don't know how to gain 1477 feet on these kinds of climbs and slopes.

Suspiciously, the Garmin is about twice the height of the Newton.

I strongly suspect your Garmin is wrong.

Check Total Ascend vs Total Descent on the Garmin. If not close than definitely Garmin is wrong.
Also worth looking at end of any activity with a return to start if Start and End Elevation are similar on both Garmin and Newton.

Thank you both for getting back to me, here is a little more information that may help:

The ride is from Copper Mountain to Breckenridge CO and back. Start out at about 9,700', drop down to 9,000', climb back up to 9,500' then turn around and drop back down to 9,000' and then climb up to 9,700'. I agree it's not very steep but it should be about 1,400'.

My garmin says 1,407' of total Ascent, Total Descent is 1,351'. My son also had his garmin and his file shows Total Ascent of 1,365', Total Descent of 1,388.

Here is the elevation data on my strava activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/350535245.

I would appreciate any other guidance. Thanks again.

Anecdotally, I mapped the ride on Map My Ride and it calculates the total ascent at 2,300'.
