iBike vs. DFPM - NP, IF, TSS, Quad Anal Comparison?

Post by rhino919 »

I also posted this question in the Wattage group, but it didn't get much response.
(Maybe I am not asking the right question?)

I have been reading "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" (TaRwaPM)
to try to understand exactly what training with power could do for
me. I believe it would really allow me to maximize my limited amount
of training time. I don't have a lot of $$ and I would like to be
able to use a PM on different bikes with different wheels. That leads
me to look at the iBike Gen III.

According to TaRwaPM, the really important information developed from
a PM are NP, IF, TSS and Quadrant Analysis. However, I haven't been
able to locate any data showing how an iBike compares to a DFPM (i.e.
SRM, PT, Quarq) for these items.

Can anyone point me to someplace where this comparison has been done?
(preferably for a Gen III unit)

Thanks in advance for the help.

I do not know where it is posted.

I can tell you I road with an ergomo and an Ibike this year they went blow for blow with each other. I also know riders on teh team used SRM along side the Ibike and found the same thing. The guy that set us up at camp had a power tap an ergmo and a garmin with his Ibike all at the same time. It looked really funny. He showed us all the files side by side. The Ibike was right with the srm profile.

TO tell you the truth I had used a HAC4 in the past so i thought this Ibike was going to be a joke. I was dead wrong. This thing works. We provided lots of input to help make some changes for the genIIIs they are even better and more durable. Also they intergrate with all wireless dfpm out there. This feature gives you real time CDa. In laymans term virtual real time wind tunnel.

I can recommend you get the Ibike with no reservations.

This is interesting because I was going to post about NP, IF and TSS and I saw this thread!

Having used an Ergomo and a PT, only the Ergomo provides real time NP IF and TSS info. Don't know about the SRM. This is a feature I'd love to see integrated into the next major firmware, if such a thing would be possible. Dunno if it can be written into the algorithms. Ergomo did it though so...

In any case, most PM users use software post ride to analyze their rides...WKO+ being a popular app (and the one I use). WKO+ provides NP, IF and TSS once you download your ride from the iBike. So while you don't have it while riding, it is certainly available post ride (just like the PT).

I don't have Quadrant analysis data, but I do have three way comparison data from a ride I did last week with a Power Tap, Quarq, and the iBike running. Here are screenshots from Cyclingpeaks software, and I added NP numbers in big numbers next to the averages (above 5 minutes, Cyclingpeaks doesn't give NP for durations under 5 minutes).

If you want Intensity Factor, you can just divide the Normalized Power by 310 (what I currently have my threshold set at). Total TSS, NP, and IF numbers are at the bottom of each image. The reason why the iBike has slightly lower Normalized power numbers is the smoothing that goes into the iBike power. Because it doesn't update quite as quick as the Powertap or Quarq, this will lower the Normalized Power. . .but it does make it easier to hold a target wattage!
