Power/heart rate conversion
Power/heart rate conversion
I currently train by heart rate zones. The more I use the ibike the more I realize my heart rate drifts all over the place. Is there a conversion chart or formula that I can use that simply switches heart rate (zones 1,2,3,4,5) to power zones? I tried to watch my power to heart rate coorelation but it seems my heart rate can be manipulated by cadence while keeping my power numbers up.
Re: Power/heart rate conversion
Heartrate is manipulated by too many variables. If you haven't done so, you might want to read Training and Racing with a Power Meter by Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan. Obviously it's geared toward power training, but there are some interesting observations about how HR correlates.

Re: Power/heart rate conversion
I started training with HR just before I got the Iibike. I then used the Ibike wired with my HR watch for a few weeks, I then dropped the HR and trained on Power only.
When I got the wireless mount HR is now included. I don't pay too much attention to it while riding. What I look at is WATT, WATT, Cadence, WATT, Slope and that's about it from time to time speed or HR just to check.
I now use HR post ride more to evaluate my fitness level. But even that can be influenced. Last year I almost crashed into a car coming out from I driveway (without looking) after that my HR was at 190+ for over 10 minutes and I was not riding strong at all.
The Ibike is a great tool, I used to have a standard sigma bike computer and getting booth to work was a real pain so now I use it as a watch and stopwatch.
What I am really looking for is a good book that explains how a hobby cyclist can analyze his rides and trends over time. I use the Ibike software and cyclingpeaks, but sometimes I don't really know what to make of the numbers. For now as long as Waats and Waats per kg are going up I am happy with it.

The best source you can get for power training & HR training is Hunter Allen's book. Even though Hunter Allen is more biased towards power training, yet he lets you know when power or HR is more important. If you really want to become very proficient, I recommend attending on of Hunter Allen's seminars.
Re: Power/heart rate conversion
I will give the book a shot. Today I wet for a ride that was supposed to be some LT intervals. I noticed on the ride out that my percieved effort was kind of high for a zone 2 heart rate, sure enough I looked at my wattage and it was very low. A half hour later I was bonked. I need to get off the heart rate addiction.
