lack of automatic negative gradient/slope

On my Ibike I could lock in the inclination and I would see the % rise or fall of the road instantaneously. Is it possible to lock in the gradient on the Newton rather than have it automatically toggle back and forth? Also, when descending the screen doesn't show any negative gradient with Hill-Automatic.It is necessary to depress the Hill button. I find it quite dangerous to have to take a hand off the bars to hit the bottom button while making a descent on a 12-18% highly technical grade. Did I miss something in the setup or is this function totally missing?

Yes, you can do what you want!

In setup, go to User/Yes/On Auto Disp. Click the center button, click up arrow to choose "Off" (Off Auto Disp), then click the center button to accept.

With this setting, when you select hill slope, it will be displayed continuously in the top window. :-)
