Bad Coastdown/Coast down procedure

Post by Clydeone »

Back ground -- I know you at ibike don't feel that coast downs are necessary on the newton, However given that I am 6'6" and like to run 35 mm tires I feel like I am out side the norm and would like to try them and see what happens

today I tried to do them -- bike sat out side for 40 minutes I did a good wincal and Tilt cal and then rode to my location and did my first with no problems however the other 3 I tried all came up with Bad Coast after I completed them

also Isaac reccommends a different coast down procedure then the Newton Manual -- It also states that a 2 mile out and back is required after the 5-8 coastdowns which is correct?

What are the ride files you attached?

The procedure says to pedal until you get to 20 mph and then coast when you are told to by the Newton, And that is exactly what I did. Am I supposed to have a car tow me to 20 mph? start at the top of a hill and coast down?? (no the instructions tell me not to do that either)

1) I stopped on the road in spot I could remember,
2) selected coastdown
3) It told me to speed up and I did until I got to 20 mph
4) then it told me to coast so I stopped pedalling and held my normal position on the bike until I got to 8 mph and it said "coast done" then "coast Calc" then 3x it said Bad Coast only the first time (which must be in another ride file)

For some reason each of your files shows you only got to 15 or 16 mph before you started to coast.

My apologies; I see now that these are complete rides, and the coast down is right at the end of each file.

The problem is that you're not getting up to 20 mph prior to starting the coast down. In all three of these ride files, your max speed is 15 mph. The measurement won't work unless you reach the 20 mph threshold speed.

I think you will get good results from the Isaac setup procedures.
