I've been offered a new aero 2 at a decent price, I've also been told that if I install the firmware updates on the i bike site, this will in fact give me all the capabilities of the aero 3... sounds dubious to me, is this true? I realise the actual visual face of the aero 2 is different though.

I believe that GEN IIIs have new hardware AND firmware.
The GEN III firmware for the Aero may not fit well (or, at all) into the GEN II. Not only that, but the firmware is written for a newer processor. There's a possibility that the firmware code may not be 100% compatible with the GEN IIs processor. This is all SWAG, though.

Yeah, you can't upload a firmware meant for Gen 3 into your Gen 2. I believe the software will prevent you from doing so as the file extension has changed with the new firmware. If you want the firmware benefits for the new Gen 3, you need to upgrade to the new Gen 3.

The firmware that works with Gen III units is 100% incompatible with the Gen II.
If you attempt to load Gen III firmware into your Gen II with iBike 3 the software will block the upload.
If you use iBike 2 and do somehow get the Gen III upload to start, you will fry your Gen II unit and the damage will not be covered under warranty.
