Are coast downs required or not?

Post by mk_42 »

The last few software/firmware iterations have made the coast downs optional...right? The manual specifically says that the calibration ride is the last "mandatory" step.
But even in the latest instructions (http://www.ibikesports.com/Download/iBi ... 09_red.pdf) the section on analyzing your cal ride still assumes you have done coast downs. If you haven't done coast downs you will get your WSF and Tilt but you won't get a CdA.
Is a profile with no CdA usable? Am I missing something?

(I have a GEN III iAero)

These instructions you reference were written in 2009 and are grossly out of date. We are removing them from the website.

The latest detailed instructions are here:

Much has been improved about the entire calibration process. Coast downs are still available but, if you do the required Fast Start sequence, and Calibration Ride, are no longer required.

The Est CdA feature in Fast Start does a great job (when used with the Cal Ride) of getting a good CdA. Coast downs can dial in your unit even more as long as they are done in accordance with the instructions.
