What is a typical value for the wind scaling factor? What would be borderline "too high" or "too low?"
Is it a feature of the unit? (different sensors have different factors but the same unit should always yield similar values)
Is it a feature of the setup? (different units on the exact same bike setup should always yield similar values)
Are there any tell-tale signs of an error (e.g. should it always be less than 1)?

I have searched the archives and this is in fact a pretty frequently asked question (without a clear answer). I thought it might get a clear answer as a stand alone topic.

These are VERY broad wind scaling generalizations:
STEM MOUNT: .7 - 1.2
HANDLEBAR MOUNT: 1.1 - 2.5

Handlebar mounts will have a higher wind scaling and there will be more variability due to the nature of the location. There are people whose units go above or below these numbers. In fact my friend's unit was 2.7 on the bars and is at 1.3 on the stem. I'm sure as soon as I post this someone will post wind scaling numbers even further out. However, all that matters is that on an out/back ride (no cars!) you average zero wind speed in a headwind/tailwind situation.
