Wind speed errors

Hi,

I just purchased an IBike Sport, I also decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the Pro which I have not received yet. I have been trying to set up the Ibike for the last several days with no success. It took a few rides to get a good calibration ride and finally succeeded. I was able to do one ride with what appears to be reasonable power readings, around 250 watts. At other times, the readings will drop to zero or shoot up to 1000 watts. After trying to do several fitness tests, where my power was reading at 0 watts, I was finally able to get a good wind cal. The problem is that my power numbers kept going up, throughout the entire test, I finished the test with a fitness level of 10 and power of 9.86 watts/kg. The wind speed was reading 70km/hr with my hand cupped over the port after the test.

When I do the wind calibration indoors, I get drifts up to about 50-60km/hr. I have done so many wind calibrations but the numbers almost always drift either up or down by at least 20km/hr. I also get have outputted the power numbers to my EDGE 705 and get spikes as high as 65000 watts. One interesting thing to note is that when I rotate the IBike vertically, the wind speed drops to zero.

With these erratic wind speed readings, I don't have any confidence in the power numbers being generated. Any help in resolving this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Just a simple check on one of the sensitivities - what do you get for you battery readings? If you have a marginal voltage (<2.7V) it may read unstable and this may also show as some of the wind variation.

Additionally, what is the aero and CdA values you get?

Tilt correction. If you do a tilt correction on a fairly level table - do not rotate the unit, but leave it in one place during all three read points. Then watch the wind cal while just sitting on the table - does it get any more stable or still big drifts?

You may want to clean off the battery contacts, too, with some alcohol.

------ Inserted after John added his message to contact Velocomp -------

Your battery voltage sounds fine - I think Velocomp will better guide you form here on.

Hi Tom,

My Battery reading is 2.8 volts but I have seen it drop as low as 2.75. The battery is new as I just received the ISport a few days ago.

I tried the tilt calibration as you suggested and the wind cal screen stayed stable for a few minutes but is now reading about 50km/h. If I angle the ISport at around 30%, the wind drops to zero. Is it normal to see a change in wind speed depending on the tilt when in a calm area?

Thanks for your help.

Dave

It is completely normal for wind speed readings to drop to zero when the iBike is pointed vertically.

It is completely abnormal for wind speed to drift upwards to 50 km/h. Please contact Aaron Timmer at atimmer@velocomp.com for technical support.
