Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
Today I got out on the tourer to do some more testing. I found a good spot with a dished road so I can roll down then roll up the other side then repeat from the other direction without having to brake. I did 4 repeats (4 times each way) which came to a distance of over 3.2km so enough to also do a ...

I've got clinchers. GP4000S 700x23 @ 100psi on Campag Zonda wheels
Maybe a result of the wind conditions. If the wind ever eases up here I'll try again but that may be a while off yet.

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
So I did a couple of quick tests recently but I hasten to add the conditions were not great with strong gusty winds. First test was a calride, coast downs, 6.4km out and back then two downhill rolls with my touring bike and the second the same with my new road bike. I had to calibrate both anyway. T...

I guess I ordered my two new mounts a few days too early
Also, is there anything you can do about the shipping charge on these smaller items for us overseas folks?

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
Fair enough. When you included barometric pressure I didn't realise you meant a reference pressure at sea level. If you are using altitude from your Garmin there's a couple of tricks when calculating power etc... - Use the uncorrected altitude to get an accurate barometric pressure - Correct the alt...

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
I calculated the air density using a complex formula that I built up from two others found on web, so I could incorporate more variables into one formula than it was possible just relying on the web. I also incorporated the air density formula from https://www.brisbanehotairballooning.com.au/faqs/e...

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
The purpose of the terminal velocity method is to eliminate any effect from acceleration or deceleration. This is always hard to do unless you have ideal conditions with a long, constant slope, preferably straight, and no wind changes. My spreadsheet takes acceleration into account so it is not nece...

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
Sorry I've been a bit quiet lately. Was wanting to try out the "elevation" method (Chung?) but realised on my last cal ride, after changing my rear tyre for a different model , I forgot to change the diameter - D'OH!!!! I did another cal ride but we've been having gusty winds of 20km/h to ...

I'm very interested in this Russ.
What I don't get is how you can work out Crr from riding uphill. Do you have a DFPM as well?

It works with any ANT+ sensor. For instance, I use it with a Garmin GSC-10 sensor and Garmin HR strap
It will NOT work with a sensor that isn't ANT+

Thanks Russ. This is certainly one of the dark arts :) I'll have to start playing with Aerolab. Re:Newton vs DFPM
The other computers do not rely on slope to compute power... the iBike does. It *isn't* consistent day to day. If the elevation change on a climb is off, the power will be off about the same %. What was the total elevation gain on that climb where the variation was 69 ft? As far as I'm aware, the i...

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
Got the upgrade and installed it. Before looking at CdA with panniers I thought I'd better do a cal ride and coast downs to get my base CdA and Crr dialled in. Also because last cal ride and coast downs I did I had the total mass a bit off and I was still learning how to do them I figured I need coa...

I can't find the Newton+ upgrade option on the store site. There is an indoor trainer upgrade and a Newton+ GT upgrade (I've already got the GT option) and an iPro to iAero upgrade but isn't that Gen3 only?

Re: Using Newton on a Touring Bike
The CdA Analysis on Selection is grayed out. Do I need a Newton+ for this to work? And if so is there an upgrade path from Newton to Newton+?
I like this approach a whole lot better than loading up 20kg of panniers and trying to get to 32km/h on a slight uphill to do a coast down 8 times over

I've got Isaac 1.0.9 for Windows but I don't see any Analyze CdA option
I did quite a bit of coasting downhill on paved roads so would be good to see the result.

Using Newton on a Touring Bike
I just returned from a week long bike tour using the Newton. The main reasons for using it were: - To get a better idea of the grades as it was in hilly country - To get a good reading of altitude to help with navigation and also to know when I was near the top of a big climb - To have a rough idea ...

Re: Files skipped on download
What happened was that after a week of riding I had 6 files in the Newton for: 10-Nov-2012 11-Nov-2012 12-Nov-2012 14-Nov-2012 15-Nov-2012 16-Nov-2012 These all showed up in the first window. So I then clicked Download and Save but I did not tick the Erase when Done checkbox. After a while it said i...

Files skipped on download
Normally I downl;oad my days ride file right after the ride but sometimes I have multiple rides saved on the Newton before I download them. A couple of times now I've noticed that some files were skipped on the download of multiple files. When downloading I use the Download ride file... button. The ...

Re: Average Power strangeness
I did a little more investigating. It turns out the Garmin never records (or maybe never receives) zero power readings - even with the Gen3. But both the Gen3 and Newton previously it used to drop down to a few watts whereas since OS2 came in the minimum power is almost never less than 20 watts and ...

Average Power strangeness
I went for a ride today aiming to average 200W. I had the Newton and Garmin 705 running with the Garmin recording the power from the Newton. As I got a few clicks from home I checked the Garmin and it said my average was 198W. So I upped the effort a bit and next time I looked I was at 200W. I then ...

Re: Displayed wind is still unstable (aka incorrect)
I use the Newton on my trekking bike also but since I have handlebar bags and other stuff on the handlebars I use the Remote Wind Sensor. I also did some coast downs because I figure with the extra furniture my aero profile will be non-standard. So now I'm pretty happy that the Newton is dialled in ...

Re: Watt dissapear in Isaac
I've done some similar experimenting with Isaac and found that if you subtract the gravity watts then you get close to what Isaac is showing. Which in your case would give you 204W which lo and behold is 1.02 x 200W
Also, whilst your braking is 0% you also need to factor that in if it is non-zero.

Re: Accurate slope range
Don't forget that tilt is affected by more than just your posture on the bike and acceleration from gravity. If you are pedalling the torque at the rear wheel causes the front of the bike to lift up. If you are braking the front of the bike will pitch downwards.
