Power very fluctuating so I did a calibration ride but...

Post by meste »

Hi, I need some help here as I have a feeling that something is wrong...

I am using the PowerPod with two bikes a street one (Scott Speedster 10) and MTB (Cube LTD Pro). Lately the profile for the road one is giving me very high fluctuations so today I did a calibration ride. It was some wind during the calibration ride so I would appreciate if someone could check the calibration profile attached here.

Main differences between previous calibration are:
Aero 0.620 before 0.362
Wind scaling 1.712 before 1.000

With the new calibration I am either getting higher overall Power values, but stable values during workout then I could see the day before. If I run Check Calibration on this last run I am getting a suggestion to change average power from 220W to 190W. So not sure what to do next. Maybe the fact that it was some wind during calibration ride was not good. I have also attached the profile and the run.

Note: I updated the numbers (I was looking at the wrong screen)

Thanks,
Serban

You have an out-and-back ride, with a long symmetrical section between minute 24 and 54. I adjusted your profile so that wind speed was the same in this section.

This dropped your watts some, but I think this looks good.

Corrected profile and ride file attached.

With this one the average power drops from 226 to 173W, if you think this is ok, then I would use it, but I definetely felt more tired than this average...

John, I remember reading somewhere that there is a button combination to start a Calibration Ride while out on a ride. Was I dreaming and there is only the procedure that has to be started from the computer?

I found an old reply also from you in this forum: If you are using FW 641, you can most definitely calibrate on the fly, without using Isaac. You press-hold the button for 4 seconds, to do a new scan (make sure there are no other bikes close by). The scan will force PP into an O&B calibration.

thanks

But I still have a question:

I go out on a ride with PP recording, Than I reach the place I want to do a calibration. As PP is still recording and do not want to wait till it goes automatically on hybernation, how do I stop the recording and start O&B calibration? This is where I am not sure.

Press-hold for 4 seconds. This will stop the current ride, cause a sensor pairing, and put PP into calibration mode.

Hi John,

Today is a sunny with no wind day so I went out and did a calibration ride which came with these results:
Aero 0.366
Wind Scaling 1.000
CdA 0.366
Fric 11.212

The one that you amended it for me after that ride was:
Aero 0.439
Wind Scaling 1.212
CdA 0.362
Fric 11.158

If I apply this new calibration to my ride from yesterday, I will get even lower power values, for example PWR 20min drops from 283W (which was a way too high) to 193W which I believe is low (actually I am starting to question my feelings as well...)

I am not sure what to do, the power values are so different and was hoping that after today's calibration with no wind and sunny on a flat road with no traffic to finally solve this matter.

What would you suggest me to do?

Thanks (attached todays calibration profile)

Your measured profile is very, very close to the corrected profile I gave you.

Your measured profile is fine.
