Magnetless sensor pairing issues

Post by albafar »

It has been touched upon in earlier threads but I think I better start a new one to keep things separated.

I'm using a Garmin 910XT computer. The GSC-10 sensor works perfect on my road bike. On my TT bike I had issues though and purchased the Garmin magnetless speed and cadence sensors. The speed sensor mounted on the front hub.

I thought I had managed to pair all parts. But here is what happens: During the ride the cadence information shows '255' permanently. Speed appears to be ok.

Back home I upload to Isaac and there is no cadence information.
I upload to Garmin Connect from the 910XT- and strangely the cadence information is present - and looks correct. In the 910XT setup menu only the ID for the cadence sensor shows up. Even though the speed sensor works properly - shows data correctly indoors when spinning the wheel.

I've attached the Isaac ride file but guess it won't help much as the cadence information is simply missing. Oh and yes - it was rather windy yesterday riding with high profile wheels :o

Has anyone experienced similar issues - and how did you fix it? There seems also to be a Garmin issue with the '255' reading....

I've had similar pairing issues with the magnet less Garmin sensor.

What is happening is that, prior to the pairing process, I spin the crank backwards, to wake up the Garmin cadence sensor, but it doesn't wake up. So, when I pair the sensor ID is not picked up.

The fix is really simple. Pedal your bike for 30 seconds, turning the crank. Stop, then do a PowerPod pairing. You'll get the cadence ID and all will be well.

I extracted the profile from your ride file attached above and there is no cadence sensor paired with your device.

I have also found that it can be difficult to wake up the Garmin Cadence sensor without actually pedaling the bike. Just spinning the crank by hand won't work most of the time for me. If I actually pedal it, it wakes up almost instantly.

Many thanks John and brantel! It seems to be working now - just went for a short spin and it worked!
