I've had problems with the iPhone Newton Tracker App failing to capture GPS data, only capturing start and end points, and the occasional in between point(s) if I stopped to see if it was working. At the end of the ride, only a mile or so distance traveled was reported, and the map looked like I was teleporting around the county. Today I figured out the problem - the application was not gathering data in the background.
To fix this problem, go to Settings -> General, and click on "Background App Refresh". Make sure that NewtonTrack is "ON", so it can gather GPS data in the background or when the iPhone is asleep.
I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the documentation or the forum topics - hope this is helpful.
