iBike and Garmin mount type/positioning questions

Post by rstrom »

I tagged onto another thread about the new iBike NEWTON Dual Purpose Mount ( http://www.ibikesports.com/detail.aspx?ID=122 ) but I'm afraid that it might not be addressed as promptly in that thread.

I'm thinking about getting a Garmin 500 for a few reasons and want to mount it in the best possible way to ensure the least interference with the iBike.

Has anyone used new this mount on the handlebars and mounted a Garmin on the stem?

I was thinking about using a Barfly ( http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?pag ... 3&minor=18 ) to mount the Garmin and just leave my iBike on the Steerer Tube mount but I'm concerned about turbulence affecting the iBike readings.

It seems like the iBike out in front and the Garmin behind would be the most accurate configuration.

Anyone have any thoughts / comments / experiences with any of these configurations?

Thanks much,

Robert

This looks like an even slicker setup that may allow for the use of any of the iBike mounts without any interference.

Again, please let me know your thoughts regarding iBike Newton+ setups with Garmin Edge 500 computer.

Thanks,

I've been using a Garmin 500 with my Newton+. I have the Garmin mounted on the left hand side of my handlebar and the Newton+ mounted on the right. The only problem that I have with that setup is quickly accessing the timer and lap buttons on the Garmin's right; but other than that the setup works quite well. I've got to say that I've been looking for a Garmin mount just like K-Edge for some time so I ordered one.

I have the exact setup that you are wanting to do. I have my Newton on the bars with the new mount (it even works with my FSA K-Wing bars) and the Garmin Edge 500 on the stem. Having the two together is actually quite nice. I bought the software upgrade so the Newton can transmit power to the Garmin. In the past (with my Gen II iAero) this was problematic since the iBike data would need significant corrections by the Mac software. Now, the Newton is generally much better to where after the ride corrections are within a say 2 or 3%, so I'm fine with the "live" values that were transmitted to the Garmin. That way the Garmin captures everything, speed, cadence, power etc. and GPS. Nice.
