Re: Trainer Accuracy
What is this DFPM I have been reading about? What does it do? Do I need it? Thanks. Good question. DFPM = direct force power meter. A DFPM is a power meter that more-directly measures the torque of the rider in order to measure power; in other words, every other power meter out there on the market....

Re: Typical values for iBike parameters?
Sorry for your frustration. I think you are doing things mostly correctly, but there are a couple of key suggestions that should improve your results. Wind conditions are the primary determinant of how good your calibration is going to be. Coastdowns only last several seconds and so there isn't much...

Trainer Accuracy
The question has come up recently about how accurate the trainer feature is and I thought I would post some data & analysis that I've done in the last few days. I'm working on a feature for being able to measure trainer coefficients if you have a DFPM installed. You would read in the SRM/PT/Q/Er...

Re: Fluid 2 Trainer Speed/Wattage
You might end up over-reporting your indoor work. It depends on how cool you keep yourself when you don't have the benefit of the natural wind and whether you are one of those who can "lay it out there" as thoroughly indoors as you do when you are trying to get a good time on one of your o...

Re: Fluid 2 Trainer Speed/Wattage
If it were me, I would compare the average powers for 20 min of all-out on the road vs. 20 min of all-out on the rollers. Take your average speed on the rollers, set the yellow cursor at that speed in the trainer window, and adjust the B coefficient until the average power is the same as what you di...

Re: Fluid 2 Trainer Speed/Wattage
Hey Travis I just got the Elite Parabolic Rollers. Think the E-motion rollers with the mag setting on 0 would show about the same wattage?? A Google search didn't turn up any resistance data for these rollers. Unless the rollers have an option for adding resistance (magnetic in the case of E-Motion...

Re: Pitch fork shaped tilt lines!
Odd things can happen to a ride file as a battery dies. Negative distance is one of the main tell-tales. You also had an odd glitch in your elevation data. I wouldn't spend any time trying to extract anything meaningful out of that ride file.

Re: Calibration Proceedure question
Guess my main question lies in when does the all the values for the profile get figured, like cda, crr, friction, is that in the processing in iBike 3? Good question. For GenIII the calculations for a profile can happen in the following ways: GenIII: On the road, in the unit: 1> 1 coast-down only 2...

Re: Battery Dies, Lose all data
@velocomp: As an aside, it would be nice to have a "low battery" warning. It's in there! GenIII models do a battery check when you first turn on the unit. This is one of those features that it would have been nice to put in the older generations, but the code space is filled up. For more ...

Re: Battery Dies, Lose all data
Any thoughts? I assume this could be replicated. It's a bummer and would be nice if it could be fixed (firmware)? I'm not the FW guy, so at the risk of saying more than I know.... I don't think that a dying battery always results in lost data, at least it hasn't for me on the few occations that I h...

Re: Fluid 2 Trainer Speed/Wattage
There's a couple of new things in iBike3 for indoor training, one of the being that you can tweak your trainer curve if needed. The Fluid model seemed to go through some revisions (or maybe it was just sample-to-sample variations) that resulted in a variation in power vs. speed results. If you don't...

Re: Would change in tubes/wheels be reflected in Crr or CDA?
(Note that real world Crr values will be slightly higher in general compared to what you see in the tables in the link above because tires run cooler on the road.) I'd say on average you could add about .002 to those Crr numbers. I don't think it's the temperature (Al tries to correct for this) so ...

Re: Would change in tubes/wheels be reflected in Crr or CDA?
The choice of wheels will have a mild impact on the CdA value. The choice of tubes & tires will have a significant impact on Crr. Personally, I don't have experience with different types of tubes because I always ride with Butyl, but this is a good resource of Crr measurements on rollers and sho...

About the sec by sec analzsis I guess I was asking so I can understand the Ibike better(better understanding=less frustration or time, of course :) ). Re: Calibration in gusting winds?
Just a quick and to the point, and maybe dumb question: Is there a way to do CoastDowns and 4 mile rides in gusting winds? No, if the wind is gusting, it really messes up the coastdown results and it will be frustrating. It is better to wait for a calm conditions, or at least steady wind conditions...

Re: Jagged tilt lines. Can the ride be salvaged?
So if the cda and crr are corrected will the watts still be off somewhat? How much 'off'' would be a good estimate? Another question is: Even, if I use a good/accurate profile w/ that ride (I think I have one profile that gives me realistic wattages compared to Kinetic trainer and power meter, lol....

Re: Temperature and tilt
I ride in Tucson, Az. On many rides, I see 30 and 40 deg changes in temperature during the ride. I've concluded, after looking at the post-ride calibration, that the iBike tilt sensor readings vary dramatically with temperature. This, of course, impacts the real-time power reading making it less us...

Re: Jagged tilt lines. Can the ride be salvaged?
Cool! Here is the file(s). Thanks too! Yes, I think the ride can be salvaged. The tilt is a problem in this ride, but that is something that iBike2 can do a good job repairing, as you have already done in your 28 mi ride. If you are riding a road bike, it looks like both your CdA and your Crr are t...

Jagged tilt lines. Can the ride be salvaged? Are my watts accurate if the tilt line is straight, but jagged? Or what if the tilt line swoops, but levels out? Will the watts be accurate where the line is straight? I can attach a ride if need be. Thanks. Yeah, post the file and we'll have a lo...

Re: How does drafting affect power readings?
I also notice regarding the 'lag' or if you will the way the iBike curve seems to trail the DFPM, that if you grab values on the slope, because of the lag then the difference is exaggerated and obviously caused by the lag. I say this because if you were to move the iBike curve a little to the left,...

Re: iPhone GPS & iBike
Travis, What data points does iBike2 need to see in the GPX file? I tried out iMapMyRide on the iPhone, but I didn't see any timestamps in their GPX file, just lat / long values. When I saw that, I didn't even bother trying to sync it to my ride file. Yep, it's hopeless if it don't record any time ...

Re: How does drafting affect power readings?
The only odd part was that there was a large fluctuation (+-100W) between the two *and* they ended up canceling out. Note that the graph above uses a 30 second rolling avg, so it is already significantly smoothed. I'm puzzled by what could be causing a such a large fluctuation on that time scale......

Re: How does drafting affect power readings?

Is this possible? Both programs use csv file. Both have their values separated by commas (CSV), but there is much more data in an iBike file organized in a differnet way. In other words, no; however, I think you could get it to work by opening your file in WKO and exporting it to the PowerTap's CSV...

Ok, I'm back on the boards after a 2 month hiatus. I didn't mean to be away so long, but it was the only thing I could do. The chart below was made from Boyd's file, with a 30 sec rolling average.
