Power meter comparision (iAero vs DFPM) - incredible

I did a calibration of my iAero a couple of days ago using a 4 mile cal ride and a dozen coast downs. It was done in less than ideal conditions. Yesterday I fitted a DFPM (Powertap) and rode a 20 min interval with 5 min cool down as an experiment to see how accurate that calibration was... (it was g...

About 11 days in total I think. That was to the UK. Service from Velocomp is excellent.

Re: Gen 1 unit

I had a similar problem and fell back to a GenII unit. In theory you should be able to load the profile and go, but in reality I found that didn't work for me. I just did a new cal ride/coast downs. Things like wind scaling may be different between the units and of course gen I doesn't have tilt cor...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

It was .787 as opposed to a little bit higher (.8xx)

Looking back over previous profiles, actually it may be OK. Average ground wind on long cal ride was .6

Ah I see what Coach does. I think you'd tweak after you've got your profile.

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

The wind scaling is determined by the out and back cal ride. This is why ideally you need to do this in calm conditions, straightish road with no traffic. Yeah I know it's not something that exists in the UK :). Yes you can go as far as you want but don't drop below 8mph like you say. For example I ...

Get Tilt button in Edit Profile->Advanced

In the iBike3 software under Profiles/Edit Profiles->Advanced option there is a tilt window with **** in it and a "Get from iBike" button. What does pressing this button actually do? How does the software determine what the last/current good tilt of the iBike was? and does it actually chan...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

Yes, you can actually go as far as you like for a cal ride before turning around and ride back. The new firmware will tell you to turn around after a mile but you can ignore it.

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

I've got to go and do two cal rides. One the new V4 length (1 mile) and then straight after, a 2 mile cal ride. I believe John thinks that a longer cal ride might help obtain a more accurate CRR. I won't be using the estimated CRR feature, but a CRR obtained during the coast downs. Basically I'll be...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

Wow that must be a difference between bar mounts and stem mounts I guess. Don't know what Operating System you are running but if it's XP there is a little free screen grabbing program called zapgrab that you can get - just google it. You can also use the Print Screen key under windows or Alt+Prints...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

John's looking at the files in the next day or so.

Do you mean CDA has been down to 1.787 from 4.74 or do you really mean wind scaling? I've never seen windscaling above 1.2 or below .7

Re: iAero-III - USB connector are hard to separate!

Once I figured out what a Q-tip was (Cotton buds to UK readers!), I followed your example and I reckon it must have reduced the force required on the USB mount by 50%. In my case I think it was actually just excess glue from the gasket since the casing was new. Good work!

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

More coast downs today, similar results. Using the coast screen was no help, wild fluctuations in both directions.

I officially give up trying to calibrate this thing without using a DFPM.

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

OK I spent the evening doing another cal ride and more coast downs. It's not an ideal day, wind is around 9mph but I gave it a go anyway. There is good and bad news... Good news: Wind Scaling is close to the result in the first posting. Tilt is exactly the same. (Anyone who says the iBike isn't cons...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

Hang on, isn't this the same as my issue (low CDA, CRR). Is there something funky going on, or are we all just unlucky. I won't know until another suitable day comes around for testing.

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

I don't know if I can be bothered. No idea when I might see another non-windy day. It shouldn't be this hard to get it right. To top it off I've just accidentally dropped the unit and it bounced down the driveway (looks OK though apart from a couple of scuffs fortunately). Edit: Now you say that, I ...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

I'd get 168/172 watts average.

The problem is that if I increase the CRR in my profile, the CDA is decreased which is clearly unrealistic, since .290 must already be on the low side for someone riding on the hoods...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

So here are the results of the Sportive I did earlier today. Power looks a bit low to me? What do others think? I did a reasonable amount of sitting in trains but plenty of solo riding too. Capture.JPG I did a very similar event in April this year and the average was 198 watts, and I'm certainly fit...

Re: V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

Cool thanks. I had a quick go with that, setting the CRR to .0038 and the CDA was calculated at 0.291. I've kept that profile, and I'll go and do some testing and ride the event tomorrow with it. I've got to use something. For interest, I did some more coastdowns today (two lots in fact) on a smooth...

Re: V4 calibration results - help required

I think with V4, I can now do the coast downs again to double check them. John did a pretty good explanation here: http://www.ibikeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1078#p5884 It's pretty windy here today, so hopefully tomorrow will work, then I can verify that the CDA is right or wrong. I'll try s...

Re: V4 calibration results - help required

Thanks Tom. The bike is a high end carbon F&F, Super Record, pretty high end Campagnolo wheels. 23mm Vittoria 320tpi clinchers, 110 psi. The bike will roll what feels like forever on a flat surface. I would describe the road surfaces as rough tarmac rather than the nice smooth stuff (I used to d...

V4 calibration results - Coastdowns

Following my earlier thread, I've done a cal ride and coast downs. Interesting results. I've fitted a new 1cm longer stem (hence the need for the recal). I think the longer stem should lower my CDA slightly as my shoulders etc will be lower. I ride with a bend in my elbows on the hoods typically. So...

Calibration - Wind direction, best practice

I'm going to redo my calibrations with the new V4 firmware tonight. There is a slight breeze today, but it's a pretty good day. With the new 2 mile cal ride, I have a few more roads to choose from now, so: 1. For maximum accuracy should the out and back cal ride be done into/against the wind or perp...

Re: iAero-III - USB connector are hard to separate!

I had that too. Check the nylon ring on the underside of the iAero. If it's wrinkled that will cause the problem. I actually broke my iPro because of this.

I wouldn't recommend any lubricant since it can cause the glue holding the nylon ring break down.

I've already had the cracked base problem. It may well be my fault then, as I tried some lubrication to prevent his issue. That's probably what's caused the problem. Thanks Tom.

Re: Selling gen II...what price can I expect?

Funnily enough I was in a similar situation. It's quite a complicated sale without a computer mount and a data cable, especially here in the UK. Then I've got the additional problem that my GenII has the G upgrade, so only works with Garmin sensors.. I've decided that it's not a bad idea to keep the...

USB Data computer mount - super tight

Any GenIII owners have the problem that the iBike computer mount is sometimes ridiculously hard to remove from the USB data cable mount? On the bikes it's fine. In fact it's so tight that I think this has actually what caused my GenIII to break. I think it's the additional nylon ring in the iBike un...
