Time Trialling with the iBike

Rode my first Time Trial event with the iBike tonight and I have to say I think it really helped with the pacing. One of the great features that doesn't seem to really get mentioned too much is the ability to display wind speed and direction in real time, it spurred me on to to push a little harder ...

Re: Missing Wind Vane

Thanks John,
I'd say about 20% of the ride had a cross wind max of about 6-8 mph so am thinking nothing significant

Re: Tilt Cal v Riding Tilt (%)

In case anyone is interested here is the response I had from technical response regarding these questions: 1) The tilt calibration from the RACR menu does over-write the tilt cal that happens as a part of a cal ride. 2) As long as the fric/riding_tilt pair is valid in the profile you are switching t...

Missing Wind Vane

Hi Guys

I went out for a training ride today but forgot to reinsert the wind vane after swapping bikes (from my race bike which has the RWS).

I have to say the wind and power data look OK, nothing I would not expect in the data so any thoughts on anything I might be missing?

Cheers

Julian

Re: "Drafting" during trainer rides

I had exactly the same thing on my last trainer ride but not on any of the previous trainer rides, I meant to experiment to see if it was related to the positioning of my fan unit but I have not ridden a trainer ride since

Re: Wind Callibration

Thanks Russ, this is exactly the kind of background I was looking for, is it possible to use this information in the calculation of Cda at all? On the subject of the RWS I have just installed one on my race bike with clip on tri bars. The idea is to keep the Newton on the stem but plugged into the R...

Re: Wind Callibration

Thanks John, I guess what i would like to understand is why is wind scaling even necessary given factory calibration? i.e is it establishing the wind specific to the position of the Newton on a given bike, is it calibrating the speed sensor against a particular speed sensor necessary due to sensor v...

Re: Wind Callibration

Thanks Fernando Wind scaling is established on a cal ride and "zeros" out the wind as you do an out/back Can we explore this a bit further, by zero you mean establish an offset right? I always though wind scaling was about calibrating the wind sensor based on the Newton's location on the b...

Re: Cda Questions

Thanks for the response guys, yeah I guess it's more complicated than my simplified version of things, and like you say, its more about relative changes than actual values which can be used reliably for the calibration. I was just having fun messing around to improve my understanding of this great t...

Tilt Cal v Riding Tilt (%)

hi guys, Another question, In the profile are 2 tilt related fields Tilt Cal and Riding Tilt (%). My understanding is that a) Tilt Cal contains the Tilt Calibration value performed in the Newton which is the offset between the Newton and the road (without a rider) b) Riding Tilt (%) is the tilt offs...

Re: Cda Questions

Today I tried snapshot Cda twice in the same spot and in the same riding position, the only difference is that once it was cycling straight into +10 mph headwind and once facing the opposite direction with the +10 mph wind now a tail wind. The results were as follows: 1. Snapshot Cda with headwind =...

Re: Wind Callibration

Hi guys, Don't know if this was ever answered so reviving the thread. I understand that a wind cal should rarely be performed but I would like to understand how to do one anyway. What am I looking for as the numbers change and what is it actually doing? i.e. is it applying the wind scaling factor fr...

Re: Coast-Downs

Yes I always try to keep the same position which is hoods elbows bent, I guess tire pressure could affect it? the unit has always been very firmly locked to the stem. Seems like I may have misunderstood riding tilt though, I always felt it was more about establishing the offset of the tilt of the un...

Re: Coast-Downs

Thanks John So what you are saying then is that the Coast-Down routine actually does measure and potentially modify riding tilt. So to clarify, if I just perform calibration rides alone (no Coast-Downs) would I always expect to see -0.7 as the riding tilt % in the profile or is it just coincidence t...

Coast-Downs

Hi guys, I tried my first set of Coast-Downs the other day, I think the workings of it all make sense but one thing I don't really get in the Coast-Downs dialog box is the relationship between the Riding Tilt % , the selected calibration rides, and the Coast-Downs Results. That is, I know the calibr...

Re: Newton Elevation

Thanks Fernando, so just to clarify, at the end of each ride where I start and end in the same place I should go into analyze route and enter start and end elevation as the same and hit accept correct? All other options are unchecked as I think you mentioned in this thread: http://www.ibikeforum.com...

Re: Cda Questions

Hi Russ, Many thanks for taking the time to explain this to me - so I have been watching my snapshot Cda over a couple of weeks now and I would say it consistently averages out to about 0.43 which obviously does not match the 0.353 in my profile. Being as I race TTs and Crits I want the best accurac...

Re: Cda Questions

This is great information, thanks guys, is there a way to work backwards then so that I can take the Cda figure I saw in the snapshot Cda of 0.45 and calculate what the Crr should be to give that Cda? Also I noticed that in Issac Tools\Cda analysis, which I know is intended for DFPM users (of which ...

Re: Cda Questions

The CdA in Newton is calculated based on your height, weight and position. Snapshot CdA can be affected by various factors: head/tail wind, road surface, your position on the bike, braking. But in theory the snapshot Cda should be close to the Cda you have set in the profile (calculated as you say ...

Cda Questions

Hi Guys, I tried snapshot Cda today and noticed the Cda reported is quite different from what I have in my profile. The profile displays Cda as 0.353 whereas the snapshot Cda was varying between 0.39 and 0.45. In the initial setup I chose the Hoods Elbows Bent option which seems to us 0.351 for Cda....

Re: ibike dash handle bar mount for Newton+

JulianBoulter, You may want to also get the RWS (remote wind sensor) for when you have the bars attached. In that case, I would suggest using two profiles and having done the cal ride for each you would be good to go. The RWS samples the air from in front of your aero bars so that it is not affecte...

Re: ibike dash handle bar mount for Newton+

Is there a reason you plan to remove the mount? It's best to leave it in position... Well it's just that I use clip on aero bars on my road bike and therefore I have ordered the tt setup and I didnt like the idea of leaving a redundant mount in place while I'm in Aero mode. As my tt ergo nova bars ...
